Dear Parents,

Welcome to the First Grade 2017-2018 school year!

I hope your child is excited about the beginning of this school year and has been preparing, as I have been - getting the classroom ready and planning wonderful and exciting lessons and activities! I also hope that your child has been practicing Words to Know, Reading, Writing, and Math skills daily! This will help them make the transition into First Grade easier!

A Little About Me

My name is Johanna Richards and I am a strong advocate of Catholic Schools. I attended St. Stephens, Holy Angels Academy, and Canisius College. This will be my 11th year teaching, and my 3rd year in First Grade! I previously taught Kindergarten, 3rd Grade, and was a Reading Aide. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood/Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Special Education – Mild Disabilities.  Currently, I am taking grad courses online for my Educational Leadership degree through Canisius College, and interning with Mrs. Fortunate. I am also the STREAM Coordinator and Thoughtful Classroom Lead Teacher.

Along with these school roles, I love to spend time with my husband, our almost 2-year-old son, Nico, and our dog, Maggie. We love going on adventures, which I enjoy sharing with my students.

What’s Happening in First Grade?
As a teacher, I strive to be a lifelong learner and am very excited to teach my class this year! We will continue to follow the Common Core Standards in ELA and Math, the Diocesan Curriculum in Religion, Social Studies, and Science (also looking at the Next generation Science Standards). We will also continue to infuse STREAM into the classroom and through after-school academies.

We have a new reading series called Superkids, are doing Morning Choice instead of Morning Work, are using an interactive SmartBoard, and spending time in the new Learning Commons.

As you know, the expectations for students entering and exiting 1st Grade, like Kindergarten, are high. I look forward to working with you this year to help your child reach their full potential, mastering grade level tasks, growing emotionally and socially, and preparing him/her for the following grade.

If you have any questions, please email me at jrichards528@gmail.com.

I anticipate a year of fun and learning with your child! Together, we will make your child’s school year “a magical adventure”!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Richards
