Dear Parents,

Welcome to the First Grade 2017-2018 school year! We have had such a gorgeous and hot summer, and I
am looking forward to a fabulous fall with your child in my class!

I hope your child is excited about the beginning of this school year and has been
preparing, as I have been - getting the classroom ready and planning wonderful and exciting
lessons and activities! I also hope that your child has been practicing Words to Know, Reading, Writing,
and Math skills daily! This will help them make the transition into First Grade “Brainy Birds” easier!

Review: A Little About Me

My name is Johanna Richards. This will be my 11th year teaching, and my 2nd year in First Grade! I
previously taught Kindergarten, 3rd Grade, and was a Reading Aide. I have my Bachelors in Early
Childhood/Childhood Education and my Masters in Special Education – Mild Disabilities.

Besides teaching, I love to spend time with my husband, our puppy, Maggie, and our newest edition, my 8
month old baby boy, Nico!

What’s Happening in First Grade?
We will continue to follow the Common Core Standards in ELA and Math, the Diocesan Curriculum in
Religion, Social Studies, and Science (also looking at the Next generation Science Standards). We will also
continue to infuse STREAM into the classroom and through after-school academies.

As you know, the expectations for students entering and exiting 1st Grade, like Kindergarten, are high. I
look forward to working with you this year to help your child “soar to new heights” - in reaching his/her
full potential, mastering grade level tasks, growing emotionally and socially, and preparing him/her for the
following grade.

Supply List Drop Off Day
**Please bring all of the supplies from the supply list to our classroom on Wednesday, August 30th from
5:00 to 7:00 pm
. It would be greatly appreciated, and this would make the first day run more smoothly for the
students and me. If this day does not work due to vacation, etc., please email me to arrange
another day/time to drop off the supplies before school starts.**

Important Reminder
The first day of school is Thursday, September 7th, and it is a full day!

If you have any questions, please email me at jrichards528@gmail.com.

I look forward to a year of fun and learning with your child! Together, we will make your child’s
school year “something to tweet about”!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Richards
